🧭 Welcome to StoryTerra
Explore 120,000+ games, books, movies, and shows by when and where their stories take place. Here's a quick guide to help you navigate:
🌍 Using the Map
Tap on country, province, or city names to filter stories set in that location.
Cities appear as clickable nodes when you zoom in, or as glowing dots if you turn on the "Lights" layer.
The map follows a hierarchical location system:
→ Clicking on a country will show stories set in that country and in any provinces or cities within it.
→ Clicking on a province shows stories from that province and any cities inside it, even if the item is specifically tagged only to a city.
→ Clicking on a city shows only items tagged to that exact city.
🕰️ Filtering by Time
If you're on desktop, hover over the century nodes on the time slider for precise selection, or you can use the time picker button.
On mobile, tap the "Time" button to manually select the time period (century, decade, or specific year).
📖 Story Cards & Media Features
Tap any story card to expand it and learn more about the item.
All its associated locations will be highlighted on the map — click any of them to zoom in.
Scroll down to see videos (available for many games and movies).
On tablet or desktop, you can also click the "Media" button to open the video in a separate window.
Use the "Pin" button to keep the video visible while you explore.
Want just the soundtrack? Tap the "Music Pin" button to pin only the audio, so you can keep browsing the map while the music plays.
🔍 Searching
Use the search bar to find stories by title.
Combine this with map or time filters for targeted results.
🎲 Random Button
Tap the "Random" button to jump to a surprise story!
It respects your current filters — location, time, and category — so it only picks from what you've selected.
🎥 City Walking Videos
Inside the video tab, all locations have real-world walking tour videos, so you can experience their vibe directly.
About StoryTerra
StoryTerra is an interactive map-based platform for exploring the stories through the lens of geography and history. Whether it's a novel set in feudal Japan, a film taking place in 1920s New York, or a video game spanning the Viking Age, Storyterra helps you discover where and when each story takes place.
This project brings together over 120,000 titles — including books, films, TV shows, and games, annotated with their narrative time periods and real-world locations or the closest location to their fictional setting. You can explore the world by clicking on cities, regions, or countries, and use a time slider that lets you browse centuries, decades, or individual years.
Storyterra is a personal project built out of a love for stories, history, and travel — and the countless ways they intersect in fiction. From ancient ruins to modern metropolises, every place has a story, and this platform is my way of mapping them all.
