England had three claimants to an empty throne in 1066: Harold Godwinson, crowned in January; Harald Hardrada of Norway, who landed in September; and William of Normandy, who landed three days after Hardrada's defeat. Two battles in three weeks, Stamford Bridge and Hastings, decided the kingdom.

Hardrada died at Stamford Bridge in September 1066 and Harold died at Hastings in October. King Harald's Saga tells the Norwegian's side all the way to that September, and The Conquest follows a Saxon family living through the Norman takeover.
