Mongol armies under Genghis Khan and his sons conquered more land than any empire before them, from northern China to Hungary, while the rulers who survived them — Mamluks in Egypt, Delhi sultans in India, kings in England and France — hardened their states to resist. Genghis Khan died in 1227 with his empire still expanding, and in Konya the poet Rumi composed the Masnavi in the 1250s-1270s.
