Moving through time
A crowded, confident Europe was hit by famine, war and plague in quick succession. Edward III of England claimed the French crown in 1337 and started the Hundred Years' War, and the Black Death arrived by ship in 1347, killing roughly a third of the continent within a few years.
Dante finished the Divine Comedy in the 1320s, just before the calamities, and Boccaccio's Decameron (1348-1353) has ten young Florentines telling stories while hiding from the plague. The Name of the Rose sets a murder mystery in a 1327 Italian monastery, and the Japanese film Onibaba follows two women surviving the wars of 14th-century Japan.
