Edward IV won his throne at Towton in 1461, still the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil, and spent the decade balancing the earl of Warwick, who made and unmade kings. In Bruges and Venice, bankers financed the same wars, and Lorenzo de' Medici came of age in Florence.

Towton in 1461 decided a decade of English politics in a single snowy day. Philippa Gregory's The White Queen follows Edward's queen Elizabeth Woodville through it, and Dorothy Dunnett's Niccolò Rising opens in the Bruges counting-houses of 1460.
