The War of the Spanish Succession pitted Britain, Holland and Austria against France and Spain from 1701, with Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in 1704. On Africa's Gold Coast, kingdoms grew rich selling captives to European slave ships, and in Japan the forty-seven ronin avenged their lord in 1701-02.

Blenheim in 1704 and the Union of 1707 redrew Britain's place in Europe. Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing opens on the Gold Coast in these years, and the Japanese film The Fall of Ako Castle stages the ronin vendetta of 1701-02. Open the 1700s on the StoryTerra map and explore its stories by place.
