Enlightenment writers argued that kings, priests and traditions had to justify themselves by reason, and their readers took the argument into the streets. Britain built a commercial empire on sugar and cotton worked by enslaved people, Prussia and Russia expanded east, and Comanche, Maratha and other powers checked every empire's advance.
