The 1770s: 1770–1779

Moving through time
American colonists declared independence in July 1776 and, with French money and troops, forced Britain's surrender at Yorktown in 1781. Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779 on his third Pacific voyage, and in London Sheridan's School for Scandal premiered in 1777 to packed houses.
1776 created a republic that kept slavery, a contradiction the century's fiction keeps revisiting. The AMC series TURN follows Washington's Culper spies in New York, and Sheridan's own School for Scandal satirizes the London gossip mill of 1777.
